چکیده

ludging from the recent literature, the problem of defining or analyzing the concept of omnipotence is a formidable one. One author has claimed to have proved the impossibility of defining omnipotencer and of those who have recently made the attempt, none has succeeded in providing a definition which is not subject to refutation by counter-example.' The leading and novel idea of our paper is that if one is sensitive to the essential temporal propertes of states of affairs, then one can construct an adequate definition of omnipotence. Working from this insight, we formulate an informative and consistent analysis of omnipotence which incorporates the following two principles: first, that what an agent brings about can be "cashed out" ir~ terms of his bringing it about that an unrestrictedly repeatable state of affairs obtains; second, that by making use of the notion of unrestricted repeatability, one can single out a class of states of affairs, S, such that necessarily, an agent, A, is omnipotent just in case for any member, e, of S, A has the ability to bring it about that e obtains.

of the Christian tradition,1 and is stated in its fullest form in the theological doctrine of God's impeccability.2, God is not only free from sin, He is incapable of moral deviation. God not only does not sin, He cannot sin. This is generally held to be part of what is communicated in the claim that God is perfectly good. On the surface, at least, this doctrine appears to be in conflict with t...

Controlled Recognition Bounds for Visual Learning and Exploration

We describe the tradeoff between the performance in a visual recognition problem and the control authority that the agent can exercise on the sensing process. We focus on the problem of “visual search” of an object in an otherwise known and static scene, propose a measure of control authority, and relate it to the expected risk and its proxy (conditional entropy of the posterior density). We sh...

Understanding Omnipotence

An omnipotent being would be a being whose power was unlimited. The power of human beings is limited in two distinct ways: we are limited with respect to our freedom of will, and we are limited in our ability to execute what we have willed. These two distinct sources of limitation suggest a simple definition of omnipotence: an omnipotent being is one that has both perfect freedom of will and pe...

Must God Create the Best?

The best world that an omnipotent God could create is the best of all logically possible worlds. Accordingly, it has been supposed that if the actual world was created by an omnipotent, perfectly good God, it must be the best of all logically possible worlds. In this paper I shall argue that ethical views typical of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition do not require the JudeoChristian theis...

High Stakes Require More Than Just Talk: What to Do About Corruption in Health Systems; Comment on “We Need to Talk About Corruption in Health Systems”

Reluctance to talk about corruption is an important barrier to action. Yet the stakes of not addressing corruption in the health sector are higher than ever. Corruption includes wrongdoing by individuals, but it is also a problem of weak institutions captured by political interests, and underfunded, unreliable administrative systems and healthcare delivery models. We ur...
